Read Aloud Techniques:
Book Selection: Choose books that are age appropriate.
Ages 0-3: Books with simple pictures and text are desirable. This age group
enjoys relating to familiar topics, animal books, and predictable and repeating story lines.
Ages 4-6: Young children enjoy books with bright pictures and interesting
story lines. Books about animals, problem solving, or books that challenge
their imagination are desirable. Predictable and rhyming books are also a
favorite.
Ages 7-10: Choose a book that will interest your child and/or address any concept, emotion or family value that you deem important. Chapter or Popular Series Books encourage continued enthusiasm.
Be sure you enjoy the book you have chosen!
Preparation: When appropriate, read the book to yourself before reading it to your children. Practice how you will create an interactive fun experience for the child. Think about the questions you will ask.
Interaction: Sit close and make sure children can experience and interact with the book personally. Allow children to see and touch the books and pictures as you read with them. Ask children to join you in making sounds and movements that are associated with the story.
Questions: Asking questions keeps children involved in the book and stimulates their minds and imaginations.
Change your Voice: Your voice is a powerful way to hold a child's interest and attention. Use your voice to make imitations and intonations.
Growl like a lion or yawn when a character is tired!
Expression: Use eye contact and lots of facial expressions. Smile! Remember that it’s not just about the pages and words you are reading; it’s about YOU!
Have fun: Your enthusiasm will be contagious and the children will learn that it can be fun to read because you are their reading role model.
Trust your instincts. You know best what your child will enjoy!
